MOWBRAY COUNTRY CLUB - PINELANDS/CAPE TOWN

This fine parkland course has hosted many top amateur and professional tournaments over the years, including the South African Open. A lot of Cape courses are designed in such a manner that the prevailing wind is either at your back or straight into you, but here there are exceptions, 14 of the 18 holes are invariably played into cross-winds. There are superb views of Table Mountain and Devil's Peak from almost every hole on the course.

CLOVELLY COUNTRY CLUB - FISH HOEK/CAPE TOWN


Tucked away in the lovely Clovelly Valley surrounded by dunes, this course is one of the Cape Peninsula's hidden treasures. It is a challenging, aesthetically pleasing and immaculately kept course. The course is situated on the Peninsula's narrow strip of land between Fish Hoek and the warm waters of False Bay with the Indian Ocean to the east, and the Atlantic to the west.

MILNERTON COUNTRY CLUB - MILNERTON/CAPE TOWN


"Out in a Rolls Royce, back in an ambulance" is a well-known saying amongst golfers, describing a good first nine followed by a disappointing inward loop. This links-type course lies on a narrow stretch of land between a lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, with magnificent views of Table Mountain throughout play.

The history of the Royal Cape Golf Club dates back to the turn of the century, however, the existing course was only finalised in the early 1930s. The course sprawls among the Cape Flats, with the holes well spaced-out and divided by trees, thick bush and scrub. A large dam come into play on the third, fourth and fifth holes making this a somewhat watery corner of the course. All in all, it is a very demanding course with narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers and fast greens. Several times host to the SA Open, Royal Cape Golf Club is certainly one of the best tests of golf in the country.

STELLENBOSCH COUNTRY CLUB - STELLENBOSCH/CAPE TOWN


Flanked by wine farms with imposing mountains as a backdrop, this excellent course was chosen to host the 1999 Mercedes Benz-Vodacom South African Open and, as this event is now part of the European Tour, this is a rare honour. Excellent bent grass greens, immaculately kept fairways and a good mix of challenging holes make for an outstanding test.

GARY PLAYER COUNTRY CLUB - SUN CITY

The Gary Player Country Club is well known as the venue for the Million Dollar Challenge, is acknowledged as a difficult and demanding course, requiring stamina and accuracy from players. Off the back markers, this course measures a staggering 6 938 metres, making it one of the longest courses in the world. For the handicap golfer, it is possible to considerably shorten the course by playing off the front tees.

LOST CITY COUNTRY CLUB - SUN CITY

Gary Player firmly believes that he has managed to create one of the top courses in the world at the Lost City. Certainly the par-three 13th is unforgettable. The green is the shape of the African continent, while three big bunkers are filled with different coloured sand to symbolise the diversity of the people of this country and continent and not to forget the live crocodiles at the waterhole. This course is superb to play on, but narrow fairways and greens separate the professionals from the weekend players.
HANS MERENSKY COUNTRY CLUB - PHALABORWA

Adjoining the Kruger National Park with its abundance of wildlife, the golfer may encounter warthog and antelope grazing nonchalantly alongside this beautiful course. The course is of a very high standard with some challenging water holes. It gives one the opportunity of combining birdies and eagles with the proper game.

SKUKUZA COUNTRY CLUB - SKUKUZA

This 9-hole course is invariably enjoyed by golfers of all levels. During play the golfer can have the rare experience of seeing antelope and warthog grazing nonchalantly on the fairways. This is an opportunity not to be missed.

KRUGER PARK GOLF COURSE - KRUGER PARK LODGE


For the golfer there's the challenge of the resort's superb 18-hole golf course, designed by Gary Player and set among the indigenous flora of the Lowveld with buck on the fairways and hippo in the waterholes.

A team of highly trained golf professionals teach in a style, which is easy to understand, visually exciting, and great fun. Each golf lesson is captured on a take-home videocassette to ensure the learning continues even after you've left Fancourt.

GEORGE COUNTRY CLUB - GEORGE


The setting is the exquisite Garden Route, with the Outeniqua Mountains as a backdrop. With 18 championship holes on a top-quality course, it is not surprising that so many good things have been said about this golf club. The region enjoys abundant rain; good soils and many beautiful trees and shrubs have been planted. The area off the fairways is heavily wooded and the 6 105-metre layout remains lush and green throughout the year.

SPARREBOSCH COUNTRY CLUB - KNYSNA


The 18-hole golf course has been designed by Ronald Fream of the Ronald Fream Golf plan Design Group of California. Since it's founding in 1972, the Golf plan Design Group has designed more than 150 golf courses throughout the world. Their designs respect the natural environment and take into consideration all necessary and appropriate long-term ecological and horticultural factors. The undulating terrain is almost perfect for the creation of a championship Scottish Highlands links-style golf course. The area is covered with beautiful varieties of fynbos, which strongly resembles Scottish heather. The course, largely designed by nature, will prove challenging to the expert, yet accessible to the everyday player. The 14th and 15th holes, which play along the steep cliffs above the Indian Ocean
